Tempelhof Feld: Tempelhof Freedom

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Cycling, jogging, skating, playing miniature golf, flying kites, barbecuing and growing vegetables in urban gardening – the airfield of the former Tempelhof Airport has been enjoyed by Berliners with great enthusiasm since its opening on May 8, 2011.

At 303 hectares, the size of the site is impressive. By comparison, London’s Hyde Park has only 240 hectares. Barbecues are allowed in three clean designated areas, each near the park entrances. If you don’t want to bring your own food, there is also a beer garden in the park. With fresh energy, you can play a round of soccer or badminton on the almost treeless and flat grassy area.

I ♥ Berlin

Other activities include miniature golf, skating, cycling, jogging or taking a Segway for a spin. In the fall, many visitors use the open space to fly kites.

The low tree cover is the park’s only shortcoming, as there is little shade and some visitors find the large, undesigned area a bit boring. Further design of Tempelhofer Feld was overturned in a referendum. Until the future development is clarified, Berliners can act as gardeners themselves in the Urban Gardening project.
